II. Jesus takes up the cross

With both hands Jesus takes the cross-beam from the seemingly uncaring soldier. The soldiers face is hidden as he carries out his orders. How many cross-beams has he handed out in his career? For him it is his job, for each convicted criminal it is the beginning of his final journey to the end.

The inclined beam foreshadows the hard and heavy burden Jesus must carry on his way to Golgotha.

In the background the walls of the pretorium can be seen, there is no way out, no possibility of escape.
