I. Jesus is condemned to death

Angry men have gathered before Pilate; they demand the death of Jesus with raised fists.

He sees only their backs, because they have forced their way between Him and Pilate. Pilate is still hesitating, you can see only his crossed legs, he represents the law.

But in his hands he is already holding a broken baton, the sign for condemnation.

Jesus is condemned in two ways: by the Jews as a blasphemer, by Pilate because he is afraid of the Jews. He has no advocate, nobody speaks for him. He is silent and passive, only the others are judging him.
