VIII. Jesus speaks with the women of Jerusalem

The walls of the city are left behind, the hills of Judea are lying before Jesus. There the women of Jerusalem are waiting for the condemned. Unrestrained but impersonal is their lamentation. Do they even know Jesus?

The tumult is pressing upon him, only the girl in the foreground seems to be disgusted by the spectacle. She is closer to the truth than the adults with their shallow affectation.

Repulsing Jesus holds His hand against the women, He knows that real grief will come upon them and their children.
